Wintery weather and work on the hill

The past two weeks have flown by amidst torrential rainfall and winter chill.
Last Thursday was so bitter ..I piked garden and stayed by the fire in the shop.
This moment of sunshine on St James was fleeting...

We heard there was a big dump of snow on the mountain....and how!!
No wonder it is chilly out..

By the weekend, there was some break in the weather so we headed up to work on Tom's newly named..'Eyrie'.. more appropriate than cubby...and he and John saw a wedge-tail overhead when on the roof last week.

But first we inspect the house and our grand doors..and trombe wall

Then the boys concentrate on getting more battens up while I scrape back windows...meanwhile the wind whips around and the clouds and showers come and go.

Tom spots a large vessel on the river..
There is current debate and protest raging re a wood chip wharf development on the peninsula across the river from us at Waterloo Bay.. We fear that with our current Tas short-sighted state government, we may see it approved despite vehement local opposition seeking to preserve the environmental integrity of the beautiful Huon River...just can't comprehend such 'economic' madness.
The campaign continues..

The weather continues to come and go...and we head down in time to get Tom to work..

Saturday evening we reprise a family favourite ...'The Five Pennies'...a Danny Kaye movie. Lots of fun and Tom giggles.

Sunday..I am treated to breakie in bed for Mothers' Day..special.
I also receive Happy mother's day calls from the girls...feeling loved
Then we get ourselves organised and up on the hill nice and early while the sun shines..

My work area...cosy under the trees..

 Spectacular view
 Love those 'builder boys'

We abandon the hill when the rain comes across again..
Narns and Jark arrive  and  they present me with lovely flowers and this gorgeous scarf
We take the next opportunity of clear sky to go up and do a bit more...Narn is such a stylish worker..
We take turns with the blow torch , scorching and scraping the paint off window frames..
A bit like making a brulee I reckon..

Jark gives John and Tom a hand on the roof

Narns and I drop Tom down to work while John and Jark stay up on the hill and plant out our new Olive Trees...lovely...

Narns cooks up a storm for dinner.
Veal rack with potato puree, roast golden and traditional beetroot, homemade sauerkraut and shedded vege I forget the name of...DELICIOUS and 10/10 for presentation..
 Speaking of presentation...look at dessert..
A twist on traditional Apple Crumble and served with homemade chai icecream..heavenly...
THANKS NARNS!!!!

Thanks for coming down Narns and Jark...we always love your visits..
The working week begins and the rain really sets in for the awhile..
Cold and miserable out....
 Cosy in...

The sun appears on Wednesday morning...but it is a chilly 3°C at 8.30 when Tom heads over to school..brrr

Narns sends me a photo on her way home from her Night shift at RHH...
Yep..it's cold

I bake try baking a Linzertorte to take to Garden to share on Thursday.
John tests it out...and although not quite the same as Susie's, it is given the thumbs up.
(My garden friends like it too)

I spend most of the morning weeding this garden..
Chickweed is taking over and smothering the lettuce..
Beds are prepared for sewing potato and rocket next week..
See that looks a bit better...

I don't think we've seen the last of the rain..

Love this view looking across the paddock to our place (the silver roof next to red brick town hall)

We finish off the week with a flat out Friday..barely time to grab some lunch on the go..
Then Tom is home and packing for weekend Scout camp.
John drives him  to 'The Lea' near Kingston...a backup plan as the original camp site near Geeveston is inaccessible due to all the rain.

Stay tuned for more house updates..
John and I plan to start marking out a new fence tomorrow to possum proof an even bigger garden space!!
