Sunday and its officially a year since I arrived in Cygnet!! What an amazing year it has been.......
Thomas surprised me yesterday with a bunch of daffodils he had picked while we were up at wattle Grove..He said they were a present to say "Happy 1st year"...what a darling boy..
The boys are up at 6.30am to get down to the hall at 7.. Its very cold out this morning.. There were snow falls down to 200 meters last night and friends who live up on Toby's Hill told us they had 3cm of snow on the ground. The rain comes and goes...not a good start to the morning for the Scouts.
I stay at home to cook a slice to take on the Kitchen Garden Walk around town today (if it is still on).
There is a short break in the weather at 8.30 so I walk down to the Hall in haste!!
Once there, I am soon caught up in the feverish activity as many hands work to get things in order for the sale to begin at 10am. Its a wonderful atmosphere and delightful
At 11am I go and join Kate on her Kitchen garden walk.. There is some blue sky appearing now...
(John heads home for e quiet sit while tom goes to Finn's place for a play)
There are a number of brave souls who arrive despite the dodgy weather...and we have a wonderful time. First stop is the Stephanie Kitchen garden at St James. Cloe and Helen tell us about the cob oven and benches they are constructing...
then Marcus gives us a tour of the garden.. and the rain comes across again.....
Then we walk up the road to Garthfied St to visit Bruce's vegie patch, alpacas and chooks...
After that we walk further up the road to Carol and Keith's beautiful house on the hill. We look at the garden then enjoy soup , bread and cakes and tea in their cosy kitchen...wonderful hospitality..
We walk up through the Golf course and down the other side of town heading to Kate's garden..
Here I branch off and go back towards the Scout Hall...first driving out to pick up tom from Finn's place. We spend a good hour or more helping pack up the hall and tidy up..
Tom and I go home but John stays on a bit longer to help.
There are boxes of books to unload...a fantastic haul from the Sale yesterday and the Garage sale today..
John is particularly delighted with his tiger book collection.
We have a restful afternoon...I read while John sorts books and Tom tinkers with lego.
We are happy to reach our beds tonight as its been a BIG weekend.
Monday and the sun makes a brief appearance this morning..
The morning is a busy one for us as we tackle lots of orders..
We are fascinated to watch Matthew Evans filming 'take' after 'take' of a sequence walking across the road in front of the shop towards Lotus Eaters.. Its a chilly morning...and they are at it for a few hours..definitely not a glamorous job..
I have to go to the dentist in Huonville in the afternoon to begin work on a crown.. Its a pleasant drive (if not so pleasant a destination!!).. And it's not too traumatic after all..
Back home , and there are a few more jobs to do in the shop. John has alot of potentising to do so I man the phone.
An uneventful night of dinner, reading then bed...nice.. No scouts tonight due to the big Scout day yesterday..
Tuesday and it begins with rain. I wander down to take a look at the Bakery that has just changed hands...now know as Double Delight...then wander up to see the toilet block in it's dismantled state..for some reason then whole roof structure has been removed and is being re-built..
We do the morning chores then get on with the day's work.
At 10am I head down to the Community garden. The sun is now shining and it feels like we might get to 16 degrees after all..
We get on with a number of jobs...pruning, weeding, sowing seeds..etc
I dig a bit of a drain to try and bet some of the water flowing out of the poly tunnel...then plant out some lettuce seedlings in the hay bales..
Its so warm..I take layer after layer off...delightful.
We decide not to have our usual cuppa as Laura (who lives at Liz's house that backs onto the garden) is not here today. She is house sitting in Franklin and unable to get across today.
Back at the shop there are orders that have to be done.
We have a nice flow of customers through during the afternoon.
At the close of the day...a delightful couple visiting from Vancouver..get chatting with us. They are touring Tasmania with a view to settling here in the next 12 months. They love Cygnet and we share our impressions. We invite then to the Tuesday night social the RV.
We have a really lovely evening of good soup and conversation with Steve , the Canadian couple and other locals. The music provided by a local couple is just fabulous...a background soundtrack of great songs...a play list I'd be happy to have to replay.. Its a really good night.
Home to settle in for the evening...
Wednesday and we can feel Spring in the air.
Our Pear tree is bursting with buds
...the Birds down at Burton's reserve are nesting...and warning me to keep away as I walk past them this morning.
The morning whizzes past with orders and a couple of customers.
John makes an Arnica cream in the afternoon..
I enjoy my usual afternoon tea with the St James group at RV...
I mind the shop til 5pm so the boys can make a start on splitting a new load of firewood...delivered this afternoon.
After work..I wander down to the Community garden to check on the lettuce seedling i planted out.. We had a downpour of rain this afternoon, so they don't need watering. I pick some lovely fresh greens in the poly tunnel for our salad tonight...yummy..
Lovely sight as I walk back home..
The rain comes across again but doesn't linger..
We enjoy our fresh dinner ...then its the usual evening routine.
Thursday and I deliberately don't take my camera today...as I want to pick up the pace a bit..(trying to jog off some of that winter flab).. But oh..what a beautiful sight ...the distant yachts are lit by the morning sun...and oh..look at the wonderful cloud reflections in the creek as I cross the bridge..got to bring the camera next time!!
We have a busy morning of orders, filling and packing cream and a number of customers too..
Just had to take a few photos of the delightful collection of books that John has got together over the past few weeks...
There is one special find in the boxes of books we bought that really excited us...
This signed copy of All That Swagger in also a First Australian Edition too...pretty special...
I go over to Yr 3/4 class to help out. We continue secret Father's Day activities...Its a lovely afternoon working with the children.
We are heading into town tonight...We have ticket to the Bell Shakespeare performance of a Molliere play "The School for Wives" at the Theatre Royal.(written in the 1630's...and translated into a brilliant contemporary play) Can't wait!!
We have a fabulous night. The Theatre Royal is the oldest continuously running theatre in Australia
The performance is utterly engaging from the start and as we sit in the 3rd row Tom doesn't miss any of the action and has alot of laughs as the story unfolds..Great stuff..
The only drawback is that it becomes a late night as the show doesn't start til 8pm...finishing at 10.30ish...then the 45 min drive home to follow... But Tom sleeps on the way home and we all clunk into our beds very quickly..
Friday (Happy Birthday Jess!!)... we have a slower start due to our late night..But we all feel the late night was worth it...
The day is icy..and we hear there was another good dump of snow not too far away. One customer told us she saw the Hartz Mountains had a thick blanket of snow, as she drove into town from Woodbridge Hill Rd...you can feel it in the air.
We have alot of work to do this morning which is a good thing. We are feeling a bit groggy ...so its good to be busy. We have alot of customers through too. David Coad brings in his latest book for us to sell..and within half an hour we have sold 2 copies..
We 'hit a wall' at about 2pm so John gets us coffee from RV to get us through the afternoon. The day is still grey and cold outside... looks like a cosy night in will be the go.
We have a delicious roast dinner and snuggle down to bed...big day tomorrow.
Saturday...and today John and Thomas are flying in to Melaleuca in the South-West wilderness.
They land there, have a bit of a walk around the area then go out on Bathurst Harbour..
We drive to Cambridge airfield near Hobart airport. We stop off at Seven Mile beach to fill in some time as we are a little early...Its a magic day..Just perfect.
The boys fly out at about 10.30 by the time the pilot is organised...and are due back at 4pm.
I have a lovely day. I drive over to Sandy Bay and look in a couple of shops...then walk down to the Yacht club..enjoying the sunshine.
Then I drive a bit further along Sandy Bay Rd and stop in a Long beach. There is a delightful walk along the foreshore..and so many people are out and about due to the lovely weather..
After my walk I head in to town and do Spotlight!! Nice to browse through the fabrics at leisure..
A few more shops ..then I drive out to Seven Mile beach again before heading to the airfield at 3.30pm to await the plane.
They touch down about 4.05pm and are all smiles..having had a wonderful day..
We stop in at the Larch tree near Kingston to see if we can harvest any sap...there is some ,but not enough for our needs...Will have to re-think that process.
John makes the offer of dinner at Blackman's Bay Beach cafe...so we enjoy a lovely meal together...sharing stories of our day..
Then a drive home via Channel highway and over the hill at Nichol's Rivulet.
Tom is in bed before long..and we have a relaxed evening . A great day!!
